From Iraq to Italy: how to build a safe and legal future

Italy and Iraq maintain economic and commercial relations regulated by various bilateral agreements. The main one is the Treaty of Friendship, Partnership and Cooperation of 2009, which establishes broad cooperation in areas such as economy, security, culture, education, science, and healthcare. Specific agreements also regulate air and maritime transport, such as the 1980 agreement to avoid double taxation on the income of transport companies. There are also tourism agreements (1983) and air traffic agreements (1965 and subsequent updates), supporting exchange and mobility between the two countries. These instruments create a favorable framework for investment and bilateral trade.

In a constantly changing world, more and more Iraqi citizens look to Italy as a concrete opportunity to improve their lives. Whether it is about seeking stability, security, or a new beginning for themselves and their families, Italy offers legal pathways for those who wish to emigrate legally to Italy and build a stable future.

But where to start? What are the legal ways to live in Italy starting from Iraq? There are practical and recognized solutions to legally relocate to Italy from Iraq, but they require preparation, awareness, and the assistance of professionals who know the Italian legal system.

The starting point: how to obtain a visa for Italy from Iraq

The first step for those who want to relocate is to understand how to obtain a visa for Italy from Iraq. The options available vary depending on personal circumstances: there are visas for family reasons, study, work, or investment. But one of the most appreciated solutions by Iraqi citizens with good financial standing is the elective residence visa for Iraqis.

This type of visa is designed for those who have independent income and want to live in Italy without carrying out work activity. It is ideal for retirees, professionals with income, and wealthy families. The main requirements are:

  • stable and sufficient financial means
  • availability of accommodation in Italy
  • private health insurance

Once the visa is obtained, it will be possible to apply for the residence permit for Iraqis in Italy, which allows legal residence in the national territory and access to essential services.

A legal path to build your future

Choosing a legal pathway is essential for those dreaming of a future in Italy for Iraqi citizens. Italian law provides various ways to obtain a residence permit for Iraqis, depending on the type of visa and purpose of stay.

Those arriving with an elective residence visa must register with the police headquarters and submit an application for the permit within eight days of entering Italy. This document will have an initial duration of one year and can be renewed if the required financial and housing conditions are maintained.

For those who wish to consider other options, alternatives include:

  • family reunification, if a close relative is already legally residing in Italy
  • study visa, for young people wishing to study at Italian institutions
  • humanitarian reasons, in cases provided for by EU regulations

All these paths fall among the legal ways to live in Italy, designed to ensure non-EU citizens a clear and lawful path.

A life choice: legally relocating to Italy from Iraq

Legally relocating to Italy from Iraq is not just a theoretical possibility. Every year, many Iraqi citizens start this path, choosing to build their future in compliance with Italian laws. Avoiding irregular paths is essential not only for legal reasons but also to ensure fundamental rights such as access to healthcare, education, and social protection.

A well-planned relocation always begins with the choice of the most suitable visa and is consolidated by obtaining the residence permit for Iraqis, which allows living, moving, and fully integrating into Italian society.

Building a future in Italy: a possible dream, with the right foundation

The desire for a new beginning, for a safe place to raise children or enjoy retirement, is shared by many. The future in Italy for Iraqi citizens can become reality if built on solid and legitimate foundations. Italian institutions offer the tools for those who choose to follow the official path, and with the right support, the path becomes clearer and more concrete.

Italy is already effectively the destination for many Iraqi citizens: according to ISTAT sources, as of January 1, 2024, Iraqi citizens residing in Italy numbered 7,207. This figure represents an increase of +3.6% compared to the previous year, confirming a gradual but steady growth trend of the Iraqi community in our country.

The territorial distribution shows a strong concentration in Central and Southern Italy: Lazio leads with 1,486 residents (20.6% of the national total), followed by Puglia (929), Trentino-Alto Adige (852), and Calabria (820). Considering the progression of recent years, it is estimated that from 2021 to 2024, an average of 400-600 new entries per year have been registered for various reasons (work, international protection, family reunification), in line with data on residence permits from the Ministry of the Interior.

Italy Visa Investments, through the Boschetti Law Firm, has been assisting Iraqi citizens for years in all stages of their relocation: from visa application to residence permit renewal, up to full integration in Italy. Every life project deserves attention, competence, and respect. And sometimes, it all starts simply with a well-posed question and a competent answer.
