Everything you need to know to obtain an investor visa in Italy

Italy today offers one of the most structured and attractive programs for obtaining residence by investment, aimed at foreign investors and non-EU entrepreneurs. The so-called Investor Visa for Italy allows non-EU citizens to obtain a residence permit for investors in exchange for a significant financial contribution to the country.

This instrument, also known as the Italian golden visa, responds to the growing demand from investor immigrants who intend to establish a solid connection with the Italian market while benefiting from a fast, efficient, and long-term oriented legal entry channel.

What is the investor visa and why it is a privileged route

The investor visa in Italy was introduced in 2017 with the aim of attracting international capital into sectors strategic for national competitiveness. Its nature sets it apart from other forms of immigration: it is a selective, individual measure designed for applicants capable of bringing direct and measurable economic value.

Designed for those wishing to invest in Italy as foreigners, the program offers a simplified path to obtain a two-year visa and subsequently a residence permit, which can be renewed. The procedure is entirely digital, centralized, and assessed by an interministerial committee.

Investment options under the Italian program

The program allows candidates to choose between four forms of investment in Italy, each of which must be supported with personal, lawful, and immediately transferable funds:

  • Italian government bonds, with a minimum investment of €2 million
  • Participation in Italian limited companies, with a minimum investment of €500,000
  • Financing of registered innovative startups, starting from €250,000
  • Philanthropic donation in sectors of public interest (such as culture, education, research, or immigration management), for at least €1 million

These options are designed to meet different profiles: from traditional financial investors to philanthropists, to entrepreneurs interested in the Italian tech ecosystem.

Who the investor visa is for

The program is aimed at high-net-worth individuals from non-EU countries who wish to establish their presence in Italy through a solid and transparent project. It is not intended for those seeking short-term speculative opportunities, but for those aiming to build long-lasting ties with the country under a clear and well-regulated entry system.

The investor visa is also suitable for those wishing to obtain residence by investment without being tied to employment or an employment contract.

Requirements for the investor visa

In addition to choosing an investment, applicants must meet some key requirements, including:

  • Proof of the necessary financial means
  • No criminal convictions or pending charges
  • Valid passport and complete personal documentation
  • Formal commitment to complete the investment within 3 months of entry
  • Proof of health coverage and housing in Italy

The entire procedure takes place online via the official portal managed by the Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy. Once the application is submitted, the committee reviews it within 30 days. If approved, a Nulla Osta valid for six months is issued, allowing the applicant to apply for the visa at the embassy or consulate.

Benefits of the program for foreign investors

Joining the Investor Visa for Italy program means entering Italy through one of the most solid legal and administrative pathways. Entry is direct, with no annual quotas, and allows free living, travel, and investment in the country.

The visa also allows family members to benefit, through family reunification procedures. For those with a medium to long-term family or entrepreneurial project, this is a particularly favorable opportunity.

For many investors, Italy is not only an economic destination, but also a cultural, strategic, and fiscal one, offering opportunities for wealth planning within a stable and competitive European framework.

A conscious choice, a structured path

For those who want to obtain an investor visa and build a future in Italy, the Investor Visa program provides a powerful, selective, and well-regulated instrument. The opportunities are concrete, but require accuracy in documentation, project clarity, and a long-term vision.

In this journey, legal expertise plays a decisive role: knowing how to present the application, within which deadlines, and in what form can make the difference between an approved or a rejected request.

Many investors choose to rely on professionals able to combine legal precision, international understanding, and confidentiality. In such sensitive contexts, the support of experts with in-depth knowledge of the program’s mechanisms can represent not only an advantage, but also an element of continuity and protection over time.
